Motorsailor S.V. Salome
Salome was custom built to an Ed Monk Sr. design
at the Tacoma WA shipyards in 1975 for a
discerning client with a goal in mind. His
specifications to the renowned naval architect
were that he wanted a vessel built to classic
lines, of stout scantlings, able to take on a
world circumnavigation. Most important, that it
should do so safely. The design that emerged
from his drawing table borrowed from an existing
fleet of commercial tuna fishing boats he had
drawn up a few years earlier. The Skookum series as
they became known, proved to be rugged ocean
capable vessels that to this day roam the Pacific from
Alaska to Tahiti following prized schools of
Albacore.
When we found her, she had been unused for a
number of years and was waiting patiently on the
hard for her new owners. We knew our long search
was over and embarked on a 2 year, 6 figure
refit during which she was re-powered with a new
low emissions 150hp turbo diesel, hull and
rigging were entirely refurbished, all
mechanical systems replaced and updated to modern standards
and the interior completely renewed.
Constructed entirely of marine grade 5086 aluminum,
she was built to withstand the rigors of the
open ocean while providing all the comforts one
has come to expect in a world cruiser. Rigged as
a staysail ketch, she offers a versatile sail
plan for all wind conditions, yet her inside
steering station makes her a comfortable all
weather motorsailor and the perfect platform for
exploring the Pacific Northwest.
Salome is equipped with modern navigation
electronics, radar, auto pilot as one would
expect of a passage maker of this caliber. For
creature comforts, a diesel furnace and wood
burning fireplace provide heating when needed.
She has a convenient washer and dryer, abundant
hot water, separate shower, 2 en-suite heads in
double cabins and 2 single bunks in forepeak
provide sleeping for 6. More can be
accommodated in a pinch. Boston Whaler shore
boat, 2 single kayaks and sailing/rowing dinghy
round out her extensive list of equipment.
